Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe. And that’s just the start of what makes it such an ideal power source.


When hydrogen is made using renewable energy, it is completely carbon-free. When used to power an FCEV, like Mirai, the only tailpipe emission is water vapour.


Electricity is produced onboard, and supplied to the electric motor as needed. Excess energy is stored in a compact battery pack.


There’s no need to change your driving habits. Where refueling infrastructure exists, simply fill the hydrogen fuel tank and you are ready to enjoy zero emissions driving at its finest.

Power Control Unit (PCU)

The PCU controls energy output by deciding when to use stored energy from the battery or draw directly from the fuel cell stack.

Electric Motor

Press the accelerator pedal and electricity from the fuel cell stack is sent to the motor.

Fuel Cell Stack

In the fuel cell stack, hydrogen and oxygen from the air combine in a chemical reaction that creates electricity to power the electric motor.

Boost Converter

Uses the same battery as a Toyota Hybrid Electric Vehicle, increasing the voltage to 650 volts, enhancing performance and making more efficient use of the electric motor.


Energy, recaptured during braking, is used to recharge the battery, and assist when high power is required, such as during acceleration.

Hydrogen Tanks

Hydrogen is pumped into the vehicle and stored in carbon-fibre reinforced, polymer lined tanks, designed for safe fuel storage.

Our tanks are designed not to leak

Our multi-patented, carbon-fiber-wrapped, polymer-lined hydrogen tanks, are built in a three-layer structure and absorb five times the crash energy of steel.

In a high speed collision, sensors stop the flow of hydrogen

To prevent hydrogen from traveling to potentially damaged systems outside of the tank, the system automatically shuts the tank’s hydrogen output valve.

Any leaked hydrogen is quickly dispersed

All hydrogen-related parts are located outside the cabin and designed to help ensure leaked hydrogen doesn’t build up.

Hydrogen escapes safely into the atmosphere

Since hydrogen gas is lighter than air, it rapidly disperses, reducing the potential for damage in the event of an ignition.
